Oops. I spoke too soon. Turns out I did break a bone — I have a teeny, tiny fracture in my tibia. Also, I have extensive bruising in my tibia and I sprained my ACL.

OK, OK. For some of you that may be Greek – it was for me, too. Basically your leg is made up of several bones. The femur is the bone in your thigh. The tibia is the larger of the two bones that make up your leg below the knee. The femur sits on top of the tibia. The ACL, or Anterior Cruciate Ligament, rests in the middle of the knee and prevents the tibia from moving out in front of the femur and gives your knee rotational stability.

What does this all mean for me? So far it means I’m in pain or discomfort all the time, which in turn makes me irritable. Normally, I’m an easygoing kind of gal, so being irritable (a.k.a. not myself) is making me irritable. I don’t tolerate standing for more than a few minutes at a time and I can just feel myself getting fatter from the lack of exercise.

On the bright side, I start physical therapy next week and am excited about moving safely toward being my active self again.

Thank you to all who have read my previous post and wished me well. I assure you that I may be a little bitchy in the short term, but I’ll be much wiser in the long term. Just think of all the knee-related knowledge I’ll gain! I’ll be able to hone my collection of facts about physical fitness and be able to better prevent similar injuries (barring errant minivans) in the future.

You know what? All bad things that happen can have positive repercussions. Can you think of any bad things that have happened to you that turned out to have shiny silver linings? Want to share that with my readers? Of course you do! Spread the wealth – help your fellow humans learn from your mistakes and see their own silver linings. May 1, 2005: Minivan Puts Me On Hold

There was no mid-April blog entry because I was in a small accident. On the morning of April 16, 2005, I went shopping at a local grocery store. I was pushing my shopping cart to my vehicle and had gotten halfway across the parking-lot road when a minivan turned left into me. She hit the shopping cart first, then me. I was fortunate — no bones broken. However, I had four stitches in my forehead (I’ll have a scar just inside the hairline on the left), the fingers of my left hand were smooshed a little (the scab on my ring finger finally fell off this past week) and I hurt my knee.

The knee injury is what has been preventing me from working on this blog and my website. All my projects (you’ll find them mentioned throughout my website) are on hold until I feel better. I’ve been using a cane since the accident, had to skip one day of work and was recently put in a “knee immobilizer” because the pain wasn’t going away as quickly as it should.

Just a note — if you can avoid the need for a knee immobilizer, do so. It is profoundly uncomfortable, makes it difficult to walk (and go to the bathroom) and impossible to drive (I take it off to drive, which the doctor said was OK). Not to mention, it makes a lousy fashion accessory!

Well, until I’m better …
